Project Spotlight: The Oaks at Cypress Cove Expansion
Cypress Cove, a beautiful senior living community located in South Fort Myers, Florida, recently celebrated their 25th anniversary.
The Story of Cypress Cove
“The story of Cypress Cove began in 1991 when a group of visionary individuals recognized the need for a retirement community that provided exceptional care and amenities for seniors. These forward-thinking individuals came together and formed a nonprofit organization known as the Lee County Community Corporation (LCCC),” according to Cypress Cove Living, a Cypress Cove Community Publication. They acquired a parcel of land in Fort Myers and began building. On April 5, 1999, Cypress Cove officially opened it’s doors to their first residents.
The community started with independent living apartments, assisted living apartments, and offered skilled nursing care. Over the years, the property continued to expand, adding more housing options such as a neighborhood of villa homes, more specialized neighborhoods, such as their memory care community, plus many more services and amenities.
Continued growth has not come without some significant setbacks and challenges over the years. In September 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane. Residents that weren’t evacuated had to move to higher ground as the storm surge flooded the entire ground level with three to five inches of water. Some residents had damage to their homes, some lost everything they owned, but thankfully there were no serious injuries and no loss of life.
Since recovering from Hurricane Ian, Cypress Cove has continued to grow and evolve. They recently completed a 12 acre campus expansion in 2024 called The Oaks at Cypress Cove. It consisted of 24 apartments and 24 villas with amazing modern amenities including a new clubhouse, fitness center and pool.
Incorporating Innovative Technology to Enhance the Wellbeing of Residents
One of the key factors that behind the continuous growth of Cypress Cove is their ability to adapt to the changing needs of their residents. They have embraced advancements in healthcare technology, and incorporated it into facets of daily living, helping them better serve the needs of their residents.
The Oaks at Cypress Cove were built with technology in mind. To best support the built-in smart home technology integrated into every unit, the community engaged Qypsys to design and implement a fiber-to-the-unit network.
The Benefits of Delivering Fiber to the Unit (FTTU)
A fiber to the unit infrastructure takes the fiber network to the closest connection point possible, directly to the doorstep of each unit. And this far-reaching infrastructure has many significant advantages over the more traditional copper-based networks. These include:
- Faster Speeds: FTTU boasts significantly faster speeds. It allows residents to do more at once, such as streaming high-definition content, downloading large files, and accessing/utilizing key technologies for chores around the house with a much smoother user experience.
- Better Reliability: Fiber optic cables are less susceptible to interference caused by electromagnetic waves or electrical currents compared to copper wires, which translates to a more reliable and stable internet connection.
- Less Latency: Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel between your device and the server. FTTU offers significantly lower latency compared to cable, resulting in a more responsive internet experience. This is particularly beneficial for real-time applications, such as the many healthcare applications residents rely on.
- Security: Fiber optic cables are inherently more secure because they transmit data using light pulses, making them more difficult to tap into compared to electrical signals in copper cables.
- Future Proof: FTTU technology is built to handle the ever-increasing demands of bandwidth usage. With its superior capacity, the network will be well-equipped for future advancements in technology and internet applications.
Integrating Technology into Resident’s Everyday Life
A strong fiber network foundation allows Cypress Cove to provide a world-class digital experience for residents. By integrating K4Community technology into the community, it provides “residents access to a myriad of technologies that empower their independence and elevate daily living, while community staff benefit from enterprise tooling that expands operational efficiencies and enhances care,” says Vice President of Innovation Joe Velderman, Cypress Living. “It’s the ‘digital front door’ for our residents to interact with their homes, our community, their loved ones, and each other.”
According to K4Community, integrated technologies will benefit residents in many ways including:
- More Communications, Better Connections: A resident mobile app and Amazon Alexa voice devices provide instant access to information (daily dining, activities and announcements) and secure communications (video chat, messaging and calling).
- Safer, More Accessible Home Environments: Smart home automation, such as lighting and temperature controls, creates both a luxury environment and safer homes for residents.
- Premium Amenities and Experiences: Residents can curate a personalized at-home experience by customizing living preferences, such as arriving at an already illuminated home, access to hundreds of virtual content experiences at any time, or having Alexa recite your personal schedule in an instant.
- Operations Optimization: Enterprise-level tooling for staff saves teams critical time and resources by reducing operations redundancies and creating a connected workplace. Remote daily check-ins are just one way the team is more efficient with their time looking after residents’ well-being.
- Holistic Resident Care: Teams can use data to better inform resident care with insights into behavioral trends, such as dining, fitness and wellness activities, plus inform on in-home safety, and more.
